General Information
The Department of Biomedicine at the University of Bergen has roughly 200 members of staff and runs research at a high international level, primarily in the fields of biochemistry and molecular biology, cell biology and physiology. In addition, the department offers courses in medicine, dentistry, pharmacology and dental hygiene. The department offers a Master’s degree and PhD-programme in human biology, with study programmes in human physiology and medical cell biology.
The department is housed in a new and well-equipped research building, Bygg for Biologiske Basalfag (Basic Biology Building - BBB), connected by a bridge to Haukeland University Hospital. The department’s research is in the field of basal and translational biomedical research relevant to basal biological issues, a number of illnesses and biomedical innovation.
Our key areas of research are: biomedicine, translational research, cancer, neurology, physiology, cell biology, molecular biology, circulation, cell signal transduction, proteomics, electronic imaging, MRI and nano science.

Local emergency plan, IBM
The local emergency plan is an attachment to the central emergency plan for UoB and and UniResarch will be implemented on the occasion of major accidents, fires, explosions or other unexpected events that may have a major impact on the University as an institution.
Purpose
The police and the fire department are responsible for handling major incidents on campuses and for establishing an emergency management. he University's emergency plans assist the emergency site management in their handling of such accidents aimed at protecting life and property. This will contribute to the provision of effective solutions and provide an overall response to the media. In situations where doubt may arise, the priorities are as follows:
- Rescue and secure lives
- Take care of the relatives
- Internal and external information
- Guard the environment against pollution
- Guard material assets
Local responsibility
The Head of the Department is responsible for the local emergency organizational plan, and provides information and support, and acts as a contact person to the central emergency management. The vice head functions as the deputy.
Area Manager (EIA) is the local scene commander, see fire and evacuation plans. Contingency Selection is appointed centrally if needed.
The department is responsible for distributing information about who is responsible and where the various evacuation sites are located in (the fire safety chapter).

ALERT
Any employee or student, who detects/observes a possible emergency, must alert:
1. Emergency support services! If there is a fire, trigger the fire alarm (push button on the wall).
- The fire alarm will notify the Operations-department, the security guard at Haukeland University Hospital, the Fire Department will also be notified automatically. This will also initiate the local fire emergency plan in the building. The area manager is the responsible chief fire-manager.
2. Alert the security at Haukeland 55 58 20 86, if appropriate alert the security at the university 55 58 85 00.
Evacuation
- If it is necessary to evacuate:
- Evacuation is carried out according to the local evacuation plan, see the chapter about fire safety
- People at risk are notified
- Fire manager and area manager initiate evacuation if it is safe to do so
- Evacuation of people who need assistance
- The building is to be protected by closing all windows and doors
- Meeting place
- The parking lot at Ulriksbanens station (cable-car station) and the hill down toward the Haukeland University Hospital (Central block) and the Children´s Hospital (Pediatrics).
- Head of the Department, vice head and executive manager assist in registration and support the evacuees at the place of evacuation

As soon as possible after the emergency situation is resolved, local fire-officers from the different floors should gather for a status meeting with the central emergency management.
Assigning personnel
The Department is responsible for monitoring the need of assigning personnel to the central emergency management.
